Halloween Paper Piecing

My girls love Halloween, like LOVE it. They want a Halloween themed birthday (in February), and they've been talking about tick or treating and costumes non-stop. We've already been to the spirit Halloween store where they pretend to be scared but don't want to leave. Since I love paper piecing and I love old fashioned Halloween costumes, I decided to come up with some fun trick or treaters for the Halloween Season. These patterns can be made into pillows, wall hangings, tote bags, or a cute little throw quilt

I had so much fun making my Trick or Treaters, I decided to try a Jack & Sally

Of Course I couldn't leave out the Sanderson Sisters!
All these patterns finish at 12x12  & can be found in my Etsy shop

Lovely Triangle Quilt

One of my best friends just had her baby on April 7th. She went with a woodland themed nursery, using soft blues, pinks, tans, & grays. She loved the look of my triangle quilt so I made her a special girly woolen version. It turned out SO cute! I am in love!

Irish Chain Baby Quilt

I LOVE making baby quilts. It's a great time to try out new patterns or color combinations. I've had my eye on Irish chain quilts for some time now, I love all the different variations out there and was excited to try one out when a good friend announced she was expecting a little girl.

I don't get to do a lot of quilting these days, due to these two, but that's OK. One day they'll be grown & I'll  have all the time in the world to sit & sew!
Until then I am LOVING being a twin mom. It is so special & so much fun.. Lots & lots of work, but they're so worth it.

Easy Perfectly Pointed Triangle Quilt

I'm in love with this modern triangle baby quilt!
I've been wanting to make a quilt using solids & I like it SO much I want to make another (good thing plenty of babies are being born!)
I needed my triangle points to be perfect, after researching (& making lots of mistakes) I perfected the point! If you're ready to make your own read on-

Easy Diagonal Baby Quilt

I am not use to quilts taking me forever to complete, but when you're pregnant with twins... It's hard to get much done. I was busy sleeping, eating, & growing babies. But I knew that I wanted to make my sweet littles a baby quilt (or two, or three), I already had lots of cute girly fabrics, so that was easy, choosing a pattern was the hard part! I decided to try a quilt-as-you-go. I had done it with a table runner before, but never an actual quilt. These instructions can be used either way, but I am writing them for a quilt-as-you-go.

3. It's the first quilt I've completed since having twins
4. It's for a childhood friend's new baby
5. It is SO simple, classy, & timeless

Hey! I finally finished my fantastic Low-volume bedspread!

About three years ago my daughter gave me a huge stack, (sixteen, in fact) of fat quarters. After months and months of pondering what style and looking for extra fabric for borders this is what I came up with. Oh yes, I also unpicked several times before I finally had a design I loved! My friend said I should just stick to quilt kits instead of trying to create my own....I don't know, I really enjoy playing around with fabrics and designs even though there are many 'do-overs'.

Triangle baby Quilt

Every time I make a triangle quilt, I promise myself that I will never make another triangle quilt! Alas, they're so cute.. I can never keep my promise. This fun quilt was made for my BFF and her baby boy. She requested the colors; lime, navy, and gray. The I set about trying to create the perfect quilt.

Fourth of July Americana Quilt

I've been wanting an Americana Quilt for some time now. I love red, white, and blue together because I'm so patriotic. Plus it's so summery and fun! I found the CUTEST Riley Blake fabric called "vintage verona" and I based all the colors for my quilt off of it.
Red, coral, navy, cornflower, off white, and white.

Stained Glass Christmas Quilt

It was love at first sight (yes, I am into romance and fabric). I am a hopeless romantic when it comes to Christmas fabric. Who can resist the reindeer, trees, and snowflakes? I for one, can not. I love Christmas fabric more than all (well Christmas and Halloween, and all cute fabrics!). When I found this moda 25th & pine, I knew I had found the love of my fabric life!!! Now I just had to come up with the perfect pattern for my new loves!

Garden Stars Tutorial

This star is a little bit tricky at first, so plan on having a seam ripper handy. However, after making a couple the task will become simple, fun and they are beautiful!

Sister Star

Finished Product

This is the beginnings of what is to be: Birthday, Christmas, Proud-of-you-for-having-the-courage-to-go-back-to-school Quilt. As you can see, quilt is made from triangles cut from one of my favorite tools...the Easy Angle triangle template. These are   6 1/2" right angle triangles. Then I laid them all out to decide how it should all go together.
MATERIALS: I love fat quarters so all of this is just that...except for the dark purple polka dot and the white with purple x's, for the sake of time I am going to call it just white. I had one yard of the white and about 1 1/4" of the dark purple.
I used eleven fat quarters which is way more fabric than needed, but I wanted lots of different purples.
Quilt measures 54 by 58".
DIRECTIONS:
Cut a total of 64 - 6 1/2" triangles (I did eight of each color)
Cut a total of 8 6 1/2 x 12 1/2 rectangles for bottom corners (I used two different colors because I ran out of the white with purple x's).
2 - 48 1/2 x 2 1/2" white strip
2 - 52 1/2 x 2 1/2 white strip
2 - 52 1/2 x 2 1/2 purple strip
2 - 56 1/2 x  4 1/2 purple strip (These are all for the sashing, I cut two of the purples a little thicker because I wanted the quilt to be rectangular).

Use the easy angle triangle template, which I have spoken about on numerous occasions It is fabulous for making triangles.
1. Cut out all fabric
2. Organize your triangles the way you desire.
3. I left all my triangles on the floor so they would not get disorganized and I picked them up two at a time and sewed them. It would work really well if you have a design wall just to leave them up and pull them down to sew.
4. After all triangles are attached in rows, begin sewing the rows together Again, it is better to leave it out so you can make sure everything is attached correctly. (I started by sewing the two center rows together and then worked outward)
5. Attach the white sashing.
6. Attach the purple sashing.
7. I used 5/8 yard of purple gingham for the binding.
8. For the flannel back I always ask the store clerk to cut the fabric in two pieces as it saves time. I bought 1 5/8 yard and then 7/8 yard.
After organizing  I sewed one row at a time and then laid it back down to make sure everything stayed in the same place. (Of course, I messed up and had to unpick and restitch)

Woven Blocks Baby Quilt

I found this block style on Pinterest and decided it would make a beautiful baby quilt with the pink, orange and  green fabric I found at the Fabric Center located in West Jordan. Finished quilt measures about 40 by 48 inches.

Running in Circles Baby Quilt

This quilt block will turn all your leftover scraps into a beautiful, cozy quilt!
I made this baby quilt for a friend who is expecting in February, but keeping the gender a surprise. I used up scraps, but tried to keep it really gender neutral. I really love how it turned out.

Summer by the Sea Quilt

This quilt was inspired by my favorite place, the beach! You may be wondering why I would add gray to a beach inspired quilt.. I live in Northern CA where we often have gray overcast beach days, and I still find them lovely! In fact I love gray and blue together.

This is the first quilt that I've made for myself (not including holiday quilts)
It was really hard to make something that was for ME, something that I would want to keep out ALL THE TIME (Holiday quilts get put away eventually!). I really enjoyed creating this block. I basically just made it up as I went along (yes I am one of those quilters!) and it somehow all came together really nicely. Below is my tutorial for my block. Enjoy, and if you make your own quilt with this block I would LOVE to see it!
Cheers!

Triangle Baby Quilt Tutorial

I had a request for this pattern/tutorial, and while trying to draw this out, I realized this looks WAY more complicated (even on paper) than it actually is. These directions may be a little difficult to understand, since I made this pattern up, and I am a beginner at giving people directions.. So if you need additional help or explaining please don't hesitate to ask!

Haunting Hexie Halloween Quilt

So.. It's the end of August....That means all the Halloween decorations have been up in stores for the last few weeks... I'm not one to complain (unless I'm looking for a seasonal summer item that can no longer be found because apparently it's already Halloween!)because I LOVE Halloween. I mean I LOVE IT!!!! I vacillate between proclaiming it (or Christmas) as my favorite holiday. But let me be clear, I DO NOT like to be scared. I won't watch scary movies. I don't like dark and disturbing things. What I like are the fun, silly, and cute monsters of Halloween. Those cute pumpkins and monsters were the inspiration for this quilt.

Star of LORAYME

It was a cold winter night and I was yearning to be in the arms of my man, but fate had taken him away this night. I was alone and short on cheddar. I had invested my meager teaching salary on a month’s supply of diet coke. I sat in my rocker contemplating the state of humanity. I began dozing off, and precipitously a vision of the night sky appeared, filled with millions of stars, unclouded from the light pollution of the city. It was so clear what I needed to do. I had the direction and inspiration. I abruptly awoke…. It was time to quilt. The time of the evening star was upon me but the lateness of the hour could not hamper my inspiration. I began gathering any material I could get my hands on. I would use scraps to create my masterpiece. I worked into the early hours of the morning, fueled by the diet coke, nothing could stop me from finishing my masterpiece. My work was nearing completion, but wait! I was lacking a fat square and snuggly backing… with my monetary retaining being in short supply from the aforementioned stock up of diet coke, what was I to do? It can’t end like this… what was I to do?

Tune in next week for the dramatic conclusion of “A Quilting Affair”.

Here are the directions just in case you have lovely scraps that you want to put to good use.

For center square:
Print Fabric
4 - 4 1/2" squares or 1 - 8 1/2" square (if you have enough fabric)
8 - 4 1/2" triangles (use the easy angle templet, I have used mine a ton and I LOVE it!)
White Fabric
4 - 4 1/2" squares
8 - 4 1/2" triangles
Outside triangles:
Print Fabrics
96 - 2 1/2 triangles
48 - 2 1/2" squares (if you have enough fabric you can cut 12 - 4 1/2" squares)
White Fabric
96 - 2 1/2" triangles
48 - 2 1/2" squares
Border Around Large Star
White Fabric
2 - 1 1/2 x 16 1/2"
Border in between small Stars
White Fabric
4 -  1 1/2 x 8 1/2"
Full length border in between Stars and for 1st border
White Fabric
4 - 1 1/ 2 x 34 1/2"
2 -  1 1/2 x 36 1/2"
Pieced border
Lot of scraps
2 1/2" and then start sewing together to make border
2 - 2 1/2 x 36 1/2"
2 - 2 1/2 x 40 1/2"
Third Border
White Fabric
2 - 2 x 40 1/2"
2 - 2 x  43 1/2"
Fourth Border
Blue Fabric
2 - 2 1/2  x 43 1/2"
2 - 2 1/2 x 47 1/2"
Fifth Border
White Fabric
2 - 3 1/2 x 47 1/2"
2 - 5 1/2 x 52 1/2"
You really need the "Easy Angle" templet for the triangles....the yare so much easier to make using it.
Cut all your pieces first and then chain stitch all the triangles together. Press triangles while right sides are still together to set the seams. Then press open.
* Sew 4 1/2" square to triangle to next triangle to white square
*Sew triangle to colored square to colored square to triangle
*Same as above
*Sew 4 1/2" square to triangle to next triangle to white square
*Sew all four rows together
Do the same thing with all triangles
*Sew 1 1/2 x 16 1/2" border on opposite sides of large star
*Sew two small stars together, sew two more small stars together, sew two more small stars together and finally sew the last two small stars together. (You will have each of the corner stars left that have not been sewn to anything).
*Sew 1 1/2 x 8 1/2" white strips to outside of stars and then sew the single star to them, then you will have two rows with four stars and then two rows with two stars.
*Sew 1 1/2 x 34 1/2" white to strips of four stars
*Sew strips with two stars to border of white on the big star. Then sew on to big star.
*Sew next 1 1/2 x 34 1/2" border on to two opposite sides.
*Sew 1 1/2 x 36 1/2" to other sides.
*Sew pieced border on
*Sew white 2 x 40 1/2" on next to border then 2 x 43 1/2" on to opposite sides
*Sew blue border on.
*Sew 3 1/2 x 47 1/2" on opposite sides and then last border on the opposite sides.
I used polyester batting
I bought 2 1/3 yards flannel for the back and 1/2 yard for the binding
